Leading Development Finance Institution seeking a Credit Director to join their office in Nairobi and lead their small global credit team split across 3 continents.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Exercise delegated authority from Credit and Portfolio Committees to approve transactions.
  • Take ownership of all of credit risk policies and ensure (1) regular review to maintain best practice and (2) alignment with Group risk appetite.
  • Provide credit related inputs in the portfolio monitoring process and ongoing development of early warning indicator frameworks
  • Work with the Finance team ensure that asset classification and Expected Credit Loss calculations are realistic and accurate in all financial reporting.
  • Coach and develop individual team members in respect of credit skills and ensure their continuous development.
  • Build a network of senior credit practitioners in relevant Frontier Markets and develop a support system of on-the-ground experts to assist in the management of credit risk.
  • Become a recognised expert and speaker on credit risk in Frontier Markets and help advocate for the firm's mission

 

Skills/ Experience Required

 

Must have knowledge of credit risk (financial, structuring, documentation, etc.), accounting principles, financial products and services, financial systems, frontier markets, stakeholder engagement processes, as well as persuasion and patience to deal with the setbacks that are characteristic for funds that operate in emerging markets.

 

  • Significant financial services experience ideally gained within Principal Investment and/or Infrastructure and Project Finance and/or Development Finance and/or Emerging or Frontier Markets.
  • Experience in underwriting of complex financial transactions in emerging markets is preferred
  • Proficient in the use of desktop programmes including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to express complex issues succinctly and clearly
  • Experience of leading, motivating and coaching team members
  • High integrity, strong ethical principles and ability to command respect at all levels.
  • Preparedness to assert one’s views, including where ethical or legal requirements are being challenged .
  • Demonstrable cultural awareness – ideally experience of working in an international environment.
  • Passion to make a difference in frontier markets.
  • Education degree – Post graduation in Finance or chartered accountancy/equivalent
